G-Dragon Shows His True Self, “I Hope You Will Stay by Me No Matter Who I Am” (Concert Recap)

At the heart of BIGBANG’s G-Dragon lies Kwon Jiyong.

G-Dragon kicked off his “Act III, M.O.T.T.E” tour at the Sangam World Cup Stadium around 8pm on June 10 and met 40,000 fans.

He showed his unique smile and said, “Hi, I’m Kwon Jiyong”. He then mentioned how his new album that was released on June 8 topped the charts. He said, “I’d been through a lot both mentally and physically while preparing for this album, but it felt good to hear such good news.”

He went on to say, “This concert might have not happened at all” indirectly referring to T.O.P’s marijuana charges. G-Dragon thanked the audience by saying, “It’s because of you I was able to hold this concert.” He also showed off his confidence by saying, “I’m so good at it, aren’t I?”

G-Dragon wore red costumes all throughout the concert to convey the concept of his “M.O.T.T.E” tour. “M.O.T.T.E” stands for “moment of truth the end”. It shows how G-Dragon wants to share the truth behind himself as the successful and glamorous G-Dragon and himself as the ordinary Kwon Jiyong.

On stage, G-Dragon showed off explosive charisma as powerful as the color red, the key color of the stage settings. Off stage, G-Dragon is a good son, a faithful friend, and a cute little brother to his parents, Taeyang, comedian Jung Hyung Don, and close friends and staff members, who sent video messages.

G-Dragon performed a total of 24 songs. He first sang “Heartbreaker”, and then moved on to “A Boy” and “One of a Kind”. Afterwards, he sang “The Leaders” with CL. IU appeared on stage as a guest and sang “Palette” along with G-Dragon. He said, “IU gave me a fridge filled with soju as a present. She told me to drink them all before joining the military.” Then, he sang the songs in his new album “Super Star” and “Bullshit” for the first time ever.

Talking about when he was making the album, G-Dragon said, “It was a time to search who I really am, who Kwon Jiyong is. The aim of this tour is to show myself in my most natural state. I tried to make the stage as simple as possible. The order of the performances starts with the songs in my first album, and at the end, I tried to show the least made-up Kwon Jiyong.”

When the concert was nearing to its end, G-Dragon talked candidly about what he felt. He said,”This has been my dream ever since I was a boy. I didn’t stop for one second. I feel good as if I’m living in a dream, but sometimes, I can’t tell whether this is a dream or reality. I’m trying really hard to find the passion I had when I first started. I hope you will stay by me no matter who I am—the humble Kwon Jiyong or the glamorous G-Dragon.”

G-Dragon also talked about his mandatory military service. He said, “I’m joining the military next year. I don’t know what will happen. This may well be the last. After I’m done doing the military service, I’ll be 32 or 33. Will you be fine with that? I won’t be. I don’t think I’ll be able to have my fingers painted like this then.”

G-Dragon then sang “This Love”, “Crooked”, and “Untitled” and made the most of his time with his 40,000 fans.

The “M.O.T.T.E” tour is G-Dragon’s third solo tour after his “Shine A Light” tour in 2009 and “One of a Kind” tour in 2013.

After his concert in Seoul, G-Dragon will hold concerts in 19 cities around the world: Macau, Singapore, Bangkok, Seattle, San Hose, LA, Houston, Chicago, Miami, New York, Toronto, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Oakland, Fukuoka, Osaka, and Tokyo. He plans to add more cities to his tour.
